The throat chakra is the fifth chakra of the spiritual body that governs the mechanics of communications, speech, and hearing. It is associated with purity of thought and sharpness of the mind.
Some of the most effective public speakers in the world have sufficiently balanced throat chakra, also known as the Vishuddha chakra. Vishuddha is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘pure.’
Healed throat chakra enables us to develop a soft (yet powerful) voice that emanates love and compassion. You must have noticed that when you listen to discourses of enlightened spiritual masters, how captivating their voice is.
Even if you cannot fully understand what they are saying, you still feel like listening to them. One of the reasons is that such people have powerful energy flowing across their throat chakra. Their energies are in perfect alignment with the universe, and their mere presence offers a blissful experience.
As the name implies, the throat chakra is located near the throat region, and it demarcates the transition from material to the selfless spiritual realm of the mind.
What that basically implies is that the mind becomes extremely sharp and focused, and there is a paradigm shift in our perception of reality and the way we see this world. The mind awakens and is no more preoccupied with mundane life stuff. This awakening helps in both spiritual and worldly pursuits.
Your mind begins to expand and rise beyond the worldly pursuits of money, fame, and recognition. It starts working towards raising your vibrations and that of the others around you. You start understanding the concept of oneness, and the illusory nature of duality begins to fade away.
Healing your throat chakra gives you the confidence to freely express your ideas, thoughts, beliefs, and opinions and develop powerful communication skills. If you’re the kind of person who feels scared or anxious to speak your mind, it’s obvious that your throat chakra needs healing.
Why Does the Throat Chakra Gets Blocked in the First Place?
It’s important to understand our behavioral patterns that obstruct energy flow in and out of our throat chakra. I will just briefly touch upon this subject because I have already covered this topic in a separate post.
If you’re interested in the details, please check out 7 Signs of Throat Chakra Blockage.
So our throat chakra can be either underactive (energy deficient) or overactive (energy excess), and both of these situations are unfavorable. Some of the reasons for blockage are as follows:
- Suppressing your thoughts, feelings, and emotions.
- Fear of expressing what’s going on in our mind (fear of being ridiculed or mocked by other people).
- Engaging in unhealthy behaviors such as people-pleasing (being the ‘yes’ man or women)
- Restlessness and impatience (lacking the ability to sit still and listen)
- Thinking too much about yourself and your own personal goals and ambitions.
- Constantly lying about things that don’t matter.
- Engaging in gossips and criticism of other people.
- Not taking care of yourself (no workouts, binge eating, unhealthy eating, taking too much stress, engaging in addictions, etc.)

Heal Your Throat Chakra
Energy imbalances within our chakras happen due to the choices we make in our daily life. It is mainly the result of the thoughts we create in our minds. The nature of vibrations we produce and interact with has a profound effect on our mind and body.
The nature of life-force energy (also known as the prana) that moves within our spiritual or ethereal body is to rise and pass in and out of the energy points (chakras).
An obstruction in the flow of this energy alters our vibration. It gives rise to unwanted vrittis (internal tendencies) such as jealousy, envy, anger, irritation, hate, resentment, greed, and many more.
Our main objective in life is to raise our vibrational frequency. A higher vibration corresponds to a state of higher consciousness. As the energy moves up from the root chakra to the crown, our consciousness expands and enables us to experience the ultimate bliss.
Let’s explore some of the practical ways to heal the throat chakra.
Practice Throat Chakra Meditation
It is clear from the above discussion that our thoughts play a very significant role in altering our vibrations. Any thought that gives rise to negative tendencies causes an energy imbalance within the throat chakra (and also the other lower chakras).
A general misconception about meditation is that it is all about being free of thoughts. But that is not true because our thoughts are nothing but our own minds. We can’t get rid of the mind.
This is where the concept of mindfulness comes into the picture. Mindfulness is the practice of being in the present moment and witnessing or observing the contents of your mind without generating any judgment or emotional reaction.
We simply allow all kinds of thoughts (good or bad in our concept), feelings, and emotions to arise, play, and finally disappear. One of the most powerful ways to practice mindfulness is meditation.
Meditation detaches you from the contents of your mind. It brings your awareness to this very present moment, also known as the ‘now.’ There are no thoughts (or just a few) in the present moment, and it is in this state, we experience the ultimate joy and bliss, which is our true nature.
To practice meditation for healing the throat chakra, sit in a comfortable posture with your eyes closed and your spine erect. Make sure that your back is straight, and don’t slouch forward or lean backward.
Now gently bring your awareness to your breath. Observe the movement of air in and out of your nostrils. After a few breaths, as your mind begins to calm down, bring your awareness to the region of your throat, and notice the flow of breath.
Imagine a bright blue light radiating and expanding from the area of the throat. For better results, you can hold throat chakra healing stones in your hand while practicing meditation. Do this every day for about 10 to 15 minutes.
The method I described above is the breath-aware meditation technique that uses the power of visualization and breath as the anchor of meditation. However, you are free to practice other forms of meditation, such as ‘mantra’ meditation, ‘OM,’ ‘AUM,’ or ‘HAM’ chanting, and more.

Some of the Other Thinks You Can do to Heal the Throat Chakra
In addition to the above, you can do some of the simple things mentioned below to heal your throat chakra.
Harness the ability to listen
Most of us are often so eager to speak that we tend to miss out on a lot of stuff. This eagerness to speak is generally the result of an anxious mind. Such a mind is often incapable of comprehending the point of view of others.
Do you struggle to finish listening to a complete podcast or YouTube videos? It’s your restless mind that makes you bounce from one source of information to another without completing any one of them.
Stop Interrupting Others While They Speak
Some people have this bad habit of cutting others while they speak. Not only do they speak out of turn, but generally speaking, they’re loud and obnoxious, and for that reason, they are often perceived as rude and arrogant.
Again, it is the restless mind ridden with fear and anxiety that gives rise to such behavior. Mindfulness practices help a great deal in such scenarios. It can help you to keep a calm mind.
It is generally seen that people who often interrupt others are also bad listeners. When you speak, they are either busy working on their smartphone or just pretending to listen – they are waiting for you to finish so that they can start talking.
People with traits of narcissism exhibit this kind of behavior, resulting from an overactive throat chakra. They show extreme confidence on the outside, but on the inside, they’re completely broken.
Learn to Speak Mindfully
The emphasis here is on the word ‘mindfully,’ which is not the same as the word ‘carefully.’ You speak mindfully when you are fully aware of the words and the context in which they are spoken.
You must have noticed that some people speak in such a way that there is a delightful sensation associated with it. Their voice is soft, yet the words are so impactful. When they speak, it feels like they’re reciting poetry.
One way to speak mindfully is to practice speaking slowly, emphasizing some letters and words, and paying attention to the choice of words. When you speak slowly, attention arises naturally.
Singing and Listening to Music
Since the throat chakra is associated with sound, singing, and listening to musical notes, it restores the energy flow across it. The best option is to practice singing classical music.
Each note (‘Sa Re Ga Ma’ for the Indian classical music and ‘Do Re Me Sa’ is the English equivalent) of classical music has a particular frequency that affects the energy flow.
Please refrain from listening to loud and abrasive music with derogating lyrics. It usually leaves a feeling of unease. However, I leave that decision to you as every one of us is different.
I personally like listening to Beethoven symphonies as they have a very calming effect on my mind. I also like listening to traditional Indian classical music.
Eat Sattvic Diet
The food that we eat has a tremendous impact on the energy flow within our body. Ayurveda recommends eating a sattvic diet that takes less time to digest and inhibits the production of ‘Ama’ which is said to be the underlying cause of many diseases.
If you want to know more about sattvic foods, please refer to my article 8 Sattvic Foods to Healthy Body and Mind.
This is again a personal choice, and since food habits vary between different geographical locations, I leave it to your personal preference. But I will stress that unhealthy foods containing a high amount of sugars and carbs should be avoided as much possible.
Aromatherapy Using Essential Oils
Aromatherapy is very useful in balancing the chakras. There are many ways to use essential oils. You can either create a blend and directly apply them onto your skin, or you can use a diffuser to make your room fragrant with the pleasant smell of essential oils.
Some of the essential oils recommended for balancing throat chakra are as follows:
For more information on essential oils, you can check out the article 15 Best Essential Oils for Balancing Chakras.
Affirmations help in reprogramming the subconscious mind to think positive and establish the purity of mind and body. The very essence of throat chakra lies in the purification of the self.
Here are some of the affirmations that help in balancing the throat chakra:
- “I’m the seeker and speaker of truth.”
- “I’m not afraid to speak my mind.”
- “I’m confident about my thoughts and opinions.”
- “I’m not going to be intimidated by the world.”
- “I’m a good listener.”
- “I’m free of fear and anxiety.”
You may realize that you actually don’t believe in some of these affirmations, but that’s okay. Just repeating them over and over again, and you will eventually start believing in them.
You can practice them either before going to bed at night or in the morning before leaving for work – whichever way you prefer.
Why It’s Important to Open the Throat Chakra
Anyone can read and learn spiritual scriptures; they’re easily available everywhere. Still, only a few people understand the essence of these spiritual teachings and practically implement them in their day-to-day lives.
There was a time when I used to read a lot about spirituality, but I never applied any of those teachings in my daily life. As a result, I did not achieve success in my endeavors.
A well-balanced throat chakra gives us the ability to give practically implement our creative thoughts and ideas. As the mind becomes sharp, our creative thinking is heightened, and so is our ability to bring those creative ideas to life.
It makes us grounded, sharpens the intellect, and gets us out of the daydreaming and fantasy mode. It makes us more aware of our surroundings and our situations in life.
A balanced throat chakra builds resilience and protects from emotional abuse.
Throat chakra includes a white elephant in its representation. This is in contrast to the root chakra that represents the black elephant. The black elephant is associated with powerful energy flow, but this energy is used for selfish material goals.
But the white elephant of the throat chakra signifies enormous energy used for the welfare of others. The difference here is that the drive to take action is selfless without longing for personal material gains.
If you have a fully balanced root chakra but an imbalanced throat chakra, you might achieve all the material success in the world, but you will still be in darkness.
Your pursuits and conquests will not give that sense of joy and fulfillment you’re seeking.
Throat chakra gives us the strength and freedom to be ourselves. It gives us the courage and confidence to express ourselves fearlessly. When the throat chakra gets active, our voice will be heard.
And this is the reason why it’s so important to balance this chakra because it gives a tremendous boost to your confidence and self-esteem.
However, it’s important to note that chakras’ activation should be done in the right order. If there are blockages in the lower chakras, you might have a tough time opening up your throat chakra.
