A Beginner’s Guide to Healing the Root Chakra ~ Survival, Safety & Vitality

This article serves as a beginner guide to root chakra healing, which is the very first chakra of the spiritual body located at the base of the spine – just below the tailbone. This is the place where the cosmic primordial energy rests in a dormant state.

We have seven chakras or psychospiritual centers within us. These energy centers are not a part of the physical body but they have a significant effect on the physical body.

They are a part of the subtle body or the spiritual body and allow the life-force energy to flow through them. It is the resting place of the kundalini energy.

When the root chakra opens, the kundalini energy rises and stimulates the other chakras. Amazing things happen when the kundalini is awakened.

Blockage or imbalance of energy flow within any of the chakras has an adverse effect on our physical and mental health.

When we talk about imbalance, what we basically mean is that the chakras should not be either blocked or too much open open to excessive energy passing through it.

Therefore, it’s important to maintain a good balance of energy flow within all of the 7 chakras. The root chakra is also known as the Muladhara chakra in Sanskrit.

The root chakra is composed of four petals which are associated with four sounds which are the keys to activating this chakra. It is said to be the starting point in spiritual development.

What is root chakra responsible for?

Root chakra is associated with survival, safety, stability, vitality, and emotional needs. It helps us to fulfill our material needs such as food, water, shelter, health and wealth.

It also helps us to ground ourselves and give us the feeling that we will always be safe and secure.

What causes the root chakra to be blocked?

Fear of any kind causes the chakra to be blocked. When we were hunter-gatherers millions of years ago, fear was a necessary part of our life because it protected us from external threats. Whenever there was a threat to our life (like an attack from a wild animal), fear triggered the ‘fight or flight’ response in the body.

In the present time we rarely encounter such threatening situations, but still we invoke fear. One of the major fear we have today is the fear of survival.

We are constantly running after making more money because we fear that we may lose of job at any point in future, or that the economy can go bad and we may lose business, we fear for our own health and the health of our family, and much more.

All of these fears get buried deep within the root chakra. At times, they manifest as anger, restlessness, irritation, anxiety, and even depression. Therefore, we must strive to free our root chakra from these fears and allow the energy to flow through them.

Here are some of the symptoms of a blocked root chakra

  • Restlessness and Irritation – People with blocked root chakra find it difficult to settle down. They feel the need to change their job frequently or change the place where they live.
  • They are insecure – Blocked root chakra creates all kinds of insecurities in people—they feel insecure about their job, health, and relationships. They manifest many fears within themselves, which eventually cause their root chakra to be blocked.
  • They get angry easily – They are unable to control their emotions and get triggered easily. As I mentioned earlier, the fears trapped within their root chakra are manifested in the form of anger time and again.
  • They lack focus – Due to the restlessness it’s difficult for someone with blocked chakra to keep patience and focus on one particular task.
  • They have issues related to money – They always struggle with finances. They struggle to earn more money, and even if they do get it somehow, it’s doesn’t stick with them for long. They lose money as fast as they earn it. They always feel that they need to be in control of the finances in the family.
  • Co-dependency – They are highly co-dependent because they are unable to deal with their emotional issues. They fear abandonment so much that they are even willing to undergo abuse at the hands of the person they are dependent on.
  • Dysfunctional relationships – They lack social skills and have a hard time trusting other people. They generally tend to have strained relationships within the family and they fear losing control and power.
  • They are never themselves – They tend to put up appearances in front of other people. They are never their genuine self.
  • They are unable to take action – Blocked root chakra makes you feel helpless. You feel like being stuck in a rut. You keep bouncing from one thing to another. Also, the fear stops you from taking actions which are required to fulfil your desires in life.

Some of the physical symptoms associated with blocked root chakra are as follows:

  • Lower back pain
  • Constipation and Indigestion
  • Hypertension
  • Impotence
  • Eating disorders
  • Bladder pain
  • Kidney infections
  • Pain in feet and lower parts of the body

All of these problems stem from fears which are trapped in the root chakra which finds expression time and again. Therefore, in order to open up your root chakra, it’s important to recognize your fears, accept them and finally let them go.

Symptoms of Root Chakra Blockage

We must remember that any event that threatens our basic survival get imprinted on the root chakra. This chakra starts developing at an early age during childhood.

If as a child your basic needs are met and your caretakers are loving, there is no reason that you should have an imbalanced or blocked root chakra.

But if your childhood was traumatic and full of fear, there are good chances that your root chakra is blocked. Any kind of verbal, mental or physical abuse results in fear which gets trapped within this chakra.

For example, if during your childhood you saw your parents struggling with finances, and fighting over issues related to it, you are most likely to develop the fear of losing money yourself in the future.

It’s important to understand that the root chakra should be in state of perfect balance. An imbalanced chakra implies that the flow of energy through it is not optimal.

There will be problems if it is either underactive or overactive. An underactive root chakra has low energy flow through it, whereas, an overactive chakra will have a high energy flow through it.

For example, an overactive root chakra manifests itself in the form of anger, aggression, control and greediness. People with overactive root chakra are stubborn and have a tough time accepting any kind of change in life.

Whereas, an underactive root chakra is associated with lack of focus, lethargy, undisciplined lifestyle, fear and anxiety, feeling of disconnect with the world, and much more.

People who have underactive root chakra have difficulty in manifesting their intentions. They are unable to take action in order to achieve their goals.

How to Heal the Root Chakra?

Now that we have some basic understanding of the root chakra we can explore ways to balance the energy flow through it.

Let go of the doubt and fear

As we discussed earlier, fear is the main reason why our root chakra gets blocked.

Therefore, it’s important to go to the very source of the fear, accept that it is there, and finally release it. Once we learn to see our fears, the uncomfortable feeling associated with them starts to fade away.

We all know the fact that fear and doubt hold us back, yet still we give into it over and over again. The problem is that we don’t like to spend much time with ourselves.

Most of us are so scared of sitting alone that we would do anything to get away from our own thoughts. For some It just feels like ‘solitary confinement’ punishment given in prison.

But sitting alone with your thoughts might the best thing if you want to overcome your fears.

Fears are generated by thoughts which are based on your past experiences and social conditioning. Only when you learn to face your fears you can truly overcome them.

This might be extremely unpleasant experience in the beginning but with time you will feel much better.

Practicing breathing exercises, yoga, and meditation can help you in this experience.

Practicing affirmations

You can also practice some root chakra affirmations to get rid of your fears. I’m listing below some of the affirmations that help me and that I practice regularly.

  • I’m a spiritual being born out of love and light.

  • I’m not responsible for other people happiness.
  • I’m also not responsible for other people unhappiness.
  • I don’t care what other people think about me.
  • Nobody has the power to make me feel bad about myself.

Many years back, at least 50+ I wrote a song called Kundalini. At that time, really didn’t know or understand much about it, just knew it was like the medical symbol., the Cadeuceus. Anyway, once I looked it up I was able to finish the song. However, the lyrics have hit me now like they didn’t hit before. I guess in my fore thought they have lain dormant. It’s a very long story that has occurred to me over those 50 years and I won’t bore you with them.

However, if you ever would like to hear my story, I would be happy, more than happy, to share it with you. And perhaps some knowledge/insight would come with that sharing. Long story short, I have a very rare disease that is being called “Morgellons Disease.” I am not the only person with this, I understand there at least 12000 in the Us and my guess would be a lot more. There has been no diagnosis but all of us have the exact same symptoms.

There are several online sites exploring this but no cure, no knowledge of how it came or comes about, Is supposedly not contagious.I have had this affliction since the late 80’s or before. In the last 3 years it has completely taken over my body, like I am being eaten alive from the inside out. I recently was told that the scientists or at least some of them think the old diseases like measles, chickenpox and other childhood diseases have laid dormant in our root chakra.

I would like others thoughts on this subject as someone has got to find a cure or at least an ease from the excruciating pain of this disease. My phone number is 505-281-3616 if you would be interested in actually speaking. I would like to thank you in advance for reading this message and any suggestions you or someone you know may have.
