Unblocking the root chakra is associated with ensuring survival, safety, stability, vitality, and fulfillment of our emotional needs. It helps us fulfill our material needs such as food, water, shelter, health, and wealth.
This article serves as a beginner guide to open the root chakra, which is the very first chakra of the spiritual body located at the base of the spine – just below the tailbone. This is the place where the cosmic primordial energy rests in a dormant state.
We have seven chakras or psychospiritual centers within us. These energy centers are not a part of the physical body, but they significantly affect the physical body.
They are a part of the subtle body or the spiritual body and allow the life-force energy to flow through them. It is the resting place of the kundalini energy.
When the root chakra opens, the kundalini energy rises and stimulates the other chakras. Amazing things happen when the kundalini is awakened.
Blockage or imbalance of energy flow within any of the chakras has an adverse effect on our physical and mental health.
When we talk about imbalance, what we basically mean is that the chakras should not be either blocked or too much open to excessive energy passing through them.
Therefore, it’s important to maintain a good balance of energy flow within all of the 7 chakras. The root chakra is also known as the Muladhara chakra in Sanskrit.
The root chakra is composed of four petals which are associated with four sounds which are the keys to activating this chakra. It is said to be the starting point in spiritual development.
It helps us to ground ourselves and gives us the feeling that we will always be safe and secure.

How Does The Root Chakra Gets Blocked?
Fear blocks the root chakra. As hunter-gatherers living in the wild, fear was a useful tool that protected us from external threats, like a wild animal’s attack. It triggered the fight-or-flight response in the body.
However, today we rarely encounter such threatening situations, but still, we invoke fear. Our bodies learned to respond to fear in a particular way through evolution, even to non-threatening situations.
Fear of survival is common, but today, we associate survival with events and situations towards which we have created perceptions in our minds. For example, the thought of going bankrupt despite having enough money is an irrational fear.
It is bad, but even if we go bankrupt, it doesn’t threaten our life in the same way as an attack from a wild animal, yet our bodily response is the same. Uncertainty coupled with volatility, we’re always on the run chasing wealth, fame, adulation, and relationships, one after the other, in the hope of securing ourselves physically and emotionally.
All of these fears get buried deep within the root chakra. At times, they manifest as anger, restlessness, irritation, anxiety, and even depression. Therefore, we must strive to free our root chakra from these fears and allow the energy to flow through them.
Here are some of the symptoms of a blocked root chakra
- Restlessness and Irritation – People with blocked root chakra find it difficult to settle down. They feel the need to change their job frequently or change the place where they live.
- They are insecure – Blocked root chakra creates all kinds of insecurities in people—they feel insecure about their job, health, and relationships. They manifest many fears within themselves, which eventually cause their root chakra to be blocked.
- They get angry easily – They are unable to control their emotions and get triggered easily. As I mentioned earlier, the fears trapped within their root chakra are manifested in the form of anger time and again.
- They lack focus – Due to the restlessness it’s difficult for someone with blocked chakra to keep patience and focus on one particular task.
- They have issues related to money – They always struggle with finances. They struggle to earn more money, and even if they do get it somehow, it’s doesn’t stick with them for long. They lose money as fast as they earn it. They always feel that they need to be in control of the finances in the family.
- Co-dependency – They are highly co-dependent because they are unable to deal with their emotional issues. They fear abandonment so much that they are even willing to undergo abuse at the hands of the person they are dependent on.
- Dysfunctional relationships – They lack social skills and have a hard time trusting other people. They generally tend to have strained relationships within the family and they fear losing control and power.
- They are never themselves – They tend to put up appearances in front of other people. They are never their genuine self.
- They are unable to take action – Blocked root chakra makes you feel helpless. You feel like being stuck in a rut. You keep bouncing from one thing to another. Also, the fear stops you from taking actions which are required to fulfil your desires in life.
Some of the physical symptoms associated with the blocked root chakra are as follows:
- Lower back pain
- Constipation and Indigestion
- Eating disorders
- Bladder pain
- Kidney infections
- Pain in feet and lower parts of the body
All of these problems stem from fears which are trapped in the root chakra which finds expression time and again. Therefore, in order to open up your root chakra, it’s important to recognize your fears, accept them and finally let them go.
Symptoms of Root Chakra Blockage
We must remember that any event that threatens our basic survival gets imprinted on the root chakra. This chakra starts developing at an early age during childhood.
If as a child your basic needs are met and your caretakers are loving, there is no reason that you should have an imbalanced or blocked root chakra.
But if your childhood was traumatic and full of fear, there are good chances that your root chakra is blocked. Any kind of verbal, mental, or physical abuse results in fear which gets trapped within this chakra.
For example, if during your childhood you saw your parents struggling with finances, and fighting over issues related to it, you are most likely to develop the fear of losing money yourself in the future.
It’s important to understand that the root chakra should be in a state of perfect balance. An imbalanced chakra implies that the flow of energy through it is not optimal.
There will be problems if it is either underactive or overactive. An underactive root chakra has low energy flow through it, whereas, an overactive chakra will have a high energy flow through it.
For example, an overactive root chakra manifests itself in the form of anger, aggression, control, and greediness. People with the overactive root chakra are stubborn and have a tough time accepting any kind of change in life.
Whereas, an underactive root chakra is associated with lack of focus, lethargy, undisciplined lifestyle, fear and anxiety, feeling of disconnect with the world, and much more.
People who have underactive root chakra have difficulty in manifesting their intentions. They are unable to take action in order to achieve their goals.
How to Open the Root Chakra?
Now that we have some basic understanding let’s look at how to open the root chakra by balancing the energy flow.
Let go of the doubt and fear
As we discussed earlier, fear is the main reason why our root chakra gets blocked.
Therefore, it’s important to go to the very source of the fear, accept that it is there, and finally release it. Once we learn to see our fears, the uncomfortable feeling associated with them starts to fade away.
We all know the fact that fear and doubt hold us back, yet still, we give into it over and over again. The problem is that we don’t like to spend much time with ourselves.
Most of us are so scared of sitting alone that we would do anything to get away from our own thoughts. For some, It just feels like ‘solitary confinement’ punishment given in prison.
But sitting alone with your thoughts might be the best thing if you want to overcome your fears.
Fears are generated by thoughts that are based on your past experiences and social conditioning. Only when you learn to face your fears you can truly overcome them.
This might be an extremely unpleasant experience in the beginning but with time you will feel much better.
Meditation by itself is an extremely powerful practice that can speed up chakra (all of them) healing by clearing the mind of negative traits and tendencies. When the mind is calm, the chakras are unlocked, and the energy naturally flows upwards, giving you a blissful experience.

Stones That Help In Healing The Root Chakra
Root chakra healing can be expedited through the use of chakra healing stones and crystals. The best way to use them is to lay down on the down and place the stone at the location of the root chakra.
Be in that position for about 2 to 5 minutes while inhaling deep breaths. It is advisable to keep your eyes closed and imagine the flow of energy reaching the location of the root chakra.
Repeat this exercise every day for a couple of months till you see some positive changes within you. If you feel that you don’t have time to do the above exercise, just place the stone in your wallet, pocket, purse, or handbag.
The idea is to keep the stone as close as possible near the location of the root chakra, so as to balance the energy flow.
Jasper is said to be a nurturing stone and helps in developing mental strength and builds resilience. It gives you the strength to handle stressful situations.
Red Jasper is a grounding stone, has physical healing properties, and stabilizes the root chakra. Not only that, but it also helps in stimulating the kundalini energy flow.

It helps in spiritual development, and at the same time, positively enhances the quality of physical and material living. It also helps in clearing emotional blockages.
Bloodstone is ideal for you if you’re suffering from low confidence and low self-esteem. It also has grounding properties like other stones and also helps in detoxifying the physical body.
Bloodstone helps in rejuvenating the mind and body and increases the flow of vital energy within the body, enabling you to live life to the fullest.
It is extremely helpful for those who experience a lot of irritation, tiredness, and fatigue.
Understanding the important of your connection with earth
Earth is one of the elements of the root chakra and anything that grounds you actually strengthens it. It helps to establish a firm balance and stability which contributes to overall wellness in life.
It’s important to keep healthy gratitude towards mother earth for providing the support for material existence. We do not realize this but nature goes all the way to help us. It provides us with warmth, food, and nourishment.
Nature is the greatest teacher and it’s important to maintain a healthy relationship with it. You don’t have to go out of the way and live like a sage in the mountains in order to get connected with nature.
A simple activity like taking a walk in a nearby park for just 10 minutes every day is good enough. It would be even better if you walk barefoot on the grass or ground. While you walk you should feel your connection with the earth.
It’s important to ground yourself and trust mother earth with your safety and well-being.

Avoid Sources of Negativity
It’s important to avoid or reduce your exposure to all sources of negativity like news, print media, social media, and also with people who thrive on negativity. This is a very important thing to do while you are healing.
You should avoid criticizing and gossiping about other people and at the same people avoid people who do that.
The way I harness positive energy for myself is that I never start my day by looking at any type of screen. The moment I wake up I go out to get some fresh air. I don’t reach out for news, email, or messages in the morning.
If something important is out there, it will reach me in some way or the other.
Once you are healed and your root chakra is in balance no negative force on this planet will be able to destabilize you or invoke fear within you. By harnessing positivity and clearing yourself of negative energy you can absolutely heal your root chakra.
