Spiritual practitioners often experience tingling sensations in the location of the chakras. It is a common phenomenon but not exclusive to the root chakra. People experience these sensations at different places in the body.
The tingling sensation that you experience at your root chakra location is the awakening of kundalini energy. Kundalini energy is primordial life-force energy that is associated with higher consciousness and enlightenment.
It rests at the base of the spine at the location of the root chakra. In most people, the kundalini rests in a dormant state. By default, there’s an inertia that prohibits the movement of this vital energy. The objective of spiritual practices like meditation is to change this energy state from potential to kinetic.
It requires a great effort to stimulate this energy. The movement of kundalini is associated with higher wisdom and spiritual awakening that enables one to transcend the material world’s barriers and gain access to a higher dimension.
The kundalini is often depicted as a serpent because of the manner in which it moves through the seven chakras of the spiritual body. In that process, it stimulates the chakras that maximize human potential and lays a path for higher spiritual development.
The reason why you’re experiencing the tingling sensation at the root chakra is that your kundalini is in the process of activation, and it is stimulating the root chakra. It is a normal occurrence, and there’s nothing to worry about.
That said, it is advised to practice kundalini yoga under the supervision of a trained master. For some people, the awakening of kundalini may induce a state of psychosis. It can be an extremely overwhelming event. For some, it’s a smooth sail, while for others, it can create trauma.
Different people are likely to experience tingling sensations in different places and with varying intensity. Some experience it at the root chakra, while others experience it at the sacral, the solar plexus, the third eye, or the crown.
Some will experience it lightly, while others will be thrown off-balance. However, there’s nothing to be afraid of. Seek proper guidance, and you’ll be fine.
If the sensation is mild, there is nothing to worry about. But if it reaches such severity that you’re unable to meditate, or it starts to interfere in your daily life, consult a kundalini yoga expert. People above the age of 50 should practice kundalini yoga under expert supervision.
Tingling sensations are just the beginning of chakra stimulation. It is an indication that you’re making progress in your practice. Apart from physical sensations, you’ll also notice a change in your psychological processes.
Don’t create feelings of aversion towards these tingling sensations. Enjoy them. Observe them with a loving and welcoming attitude. The universe is assisting you in your path of spiritual development. When your chakras are sufficiently activated, these sensations will disappear.
Think of this process as vacuuming. The energy moves around like a vacuum cleaner, clearing the chakras of dirt (negative energies that create blockages). The more dirt there is within a chakra, the harder you’ll have to clean. Therefore, when the blockages are severe, the impact of kundalini hitting the chakra is felt harder.
The opening of the root chakra stimulated by kundalini is associated with security, stability, vitality, and emotional regulation. It is an indication you’re making progress both materially and spiritually. You will see an increase in your confidence, self-esteem, and reduced dependency on others.
You may be wondering why does the kundalini rise? According to ancient scriptures, the kundalini is nothing but a part of the divine cosmic energy. The higher purpose of our existence is to merge this local energy with universal energy.
It is known as the union of ‘Shiva’ and ‘Shakti.’ It is the nature of kundalini to rise. It wants to merge with the universal consciousness. For more information, please read my article on Awakening the Third Eye.
Tingling Sensations in Other Chakras
As I mentioned earlier, the tingling sensations are not limited to the root chakra. Many people have reported these sensations in their sacral, solar plexus, and heart.
Tingling in the sacral chakra indicates the activation of this chakra by kundalini stimulation. It is associated with confidence, self-esteem, creativity, passion, pleasure, abundance, sensuality, and more.
Finally, I’ll conclude by talking about the tingling sensations in the crown chakra, indicating direct communication from the universe—transfer of spiritual knowledge to realize the higher self or superconsciousness.
When the crown chakra communication happens through divine frequency, there is a tingling sensation at the top of the head. In comparison to the root chakra, the sensation felt at the crown chakra is soft and sweet. It’s an extremely pleasant sensation. It is always gentle, and it never throws you off-balance.
The crown chakra (Sahasrara) is the 7th chakra located at the top of the head. It is associated with states of higher awakening in which the limited consciousness merges with universal consciousness. It where we have the ultimate self-realization.
